The Indian Coffeehouse: Still a hub of commerce and friendship

Amidst a bustling street full of book vendors a small sign points the way up a humble narrow staircase. A persevering traveler climbs the daunting four flights of stairs to find themselves welcomed into a wide open space through ornate double doors. Above, rapidly spinning fans blow a refreshing breeze down on clusters of solid wooden tables. Light chattering of conversation floats up on the warm air from the ground floor, greeting the ears of coffee drinkers enjoying the views of sunlit windows from the upper balcony. It is a meeting place of minds; a gathering place for students, friends, and philosophers alike. Waiters in white caps scurry from table to table bearing platters laden with cold coffee, biryani, and kebabs. Aside from the enjoyment of good food, refreshing beverages, and satisfying conversation, our weary traveler has the fascinating experience of being a part of a landmark, a place of significance and influence for at least 100 years. As he sits down amid other blissful customers, he begins to carry on a legacy of thoughtfulness and satisfaction that has yet to be disappointed.

Our group found this spot to be a welcome respite from the heat of the summer and a lovely place to rest and rejuvenate before venturing back out into the busy streets. We enjoyed refreshing cold coffee and an interesting variety of food choices. We met students from a variety of backgrounds and participated in our own interesting conversations in the midst of a bustling cultural icon.

For anyone visiting Kolkata and looking for an interesting and restful location to enjoy ambience and tasty food, don’t hesitate to stop by the Indian Coffeehouse.
